Sitharamam Kakarala

Professor, NALSAR University of LAW, Hyderabad. Since 1 October 2024.

Before joining NALSAR, I taught at Azim Premji University for close to a decade. Prior to this position, I had taught at the National Law School of India University, Bangalore during 1993 and 2004 in various capacities, as Senior Fellow at the Centre for the Study of Culture and Society, Bangalore during 2004 and 2013, including as Director of the centre during 2008 and 2011, at the National Law University, Delhi as Visiting Professor during 2012 and 2013, briefly as Visiting Professor at School of Policy and Governance, Azim Premji University from March to May 2014, and as Vice Chancellor, Glocal University from June 2014 to April 2015.

During these years I had taught various courses in interdisciplinary legal studies and political theory, law and culture, human rights law, comparative law and comparative constitutionalism. My research interests include understanding postcolonial constitutionalisms, especially the developments related to the languages of human rights in the global South, contemporary social and legal theory, and comparative studies.

I did my Ph.D. in Political Science, which i pursued at the Centre for Social Studies, Surat, an LLM in Human Rights Law from the University of Nottingham, and an MA in Political Philosophy from the University of Madras.

I was a recipient of the British Chevening Fellowship in human rights law (1995-96), and the Commonwealth Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Human Rights Law (2000-01 at the Warwick Law School). I was a Fellow at the Nantes Institute of Advanced Studies, Nantes, France in 2009 & 2017.
